Welcome to our Earthship blog! We first fell in love with the concept of the Earthship about 20 minutes into watching the Garbage Warrior in 2008. We paused the movie, looked at each other and said “We have to build one of these!”. And that was it, since that day we have been on a path to building our own.

Here are the renderings with 9 courses of tires added. I have added the vapor wrap and an exhaust vent out the side of our cold storage.

Here are the renderings for the second course of tires. This is what I have learned so far…

1 – I need to set each course of tires back by 1.25” from the previous course to get the proper lean into the berm.

2- There is some play on the corner tires so I do not need to be as precise as I thought with tire sizes.

3 – The vent tube positions may shift slightly from what is shown on the drawings to better match the tire layouts.

4 – The concrete filler beside the vent tubes and at the ends provide more play to compensate for varying tire sizes (tire tread wear etc.).  So again, I do not need to be as precise and will be less picky when collecting tires.

Here are the renderings for the first course of tires. This is what I have learned so far…

1 – How to layout the first course using the instructions on the planview drawing (very clear).

2- How to layout out the three tire turn.

3 – The corners on the north side of the building are not the same as the three tire turn and require some tweaking.

4 – I will need to learn how to mix concrete right away!

5 – Pounding a virtual tire is much easier than a real one  :)

Roof Beams

We stopped by to visit our roof beams last week. We had these milled from pine trees that needed to be brought down because they were too close to a house. They should look great once they get planed.
